by Joel Bermanpublished onThis is the port of Rome and there are Etruscan tombs dating back to the 7th century BCE.
The Fortino di San Pietro was originally a lighthouse in the 2nd century CE, and over the years kept up and eventually used as a lazaretto or maritime quarantine hospital starting with the plague of 1656. The port was heavily bombed by the Allies in 1943 but still survives. The Forte Michangelo was built in the 16th century to defend the port, mostly from pirates.
